After the storm has passed and it is safe to be outside, you can begin inspecting the exterior of your home for storm damage. If you see downed power lines, electrical hazards, or flooding, keep away from the area and immediately call 911.

• Check for signs of wind damage such as loose or broken shingles, tears or buckling to flashing, loose or crumbling roofing cement or loose bricks on your chimney
• Check for signs of water damage such as water build-up in your gutters, water spots or discoloration on your ceilings, cracking / peeling / bubbling of the paint or wallpaper on your walls, gaps or curling in your floorboards or wood that feels soft to the touch / damp, moisture build-up on windows as well as cracked, curled or missing shingles

Make temporary fixes to minimize damage to your property

If the roof is severely damaged in an area directly above a living space, be sure to place a bucket or garbage can under the leaks and remove any valuables in the area in order to prevent further damage. Serious damage may need to be waterproofed quickly using a tarp, while smaller repairs can be shingled immediately.

Your insurance company will arrange an appointment for an adjuster to come out to your home and assess the roof damage.  This will help you evaluate if the damage is large enough to be covered through home insurance, or whether it would be more economical to hire a contractor directly for any necessary repairs.
