Holiday Decorating Safety Tips for Your Home Exterior

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips for Your Home Exterior

The holiday season is here, and many homeowners are ready to brighten up their homes with festive outdoor décor. Before you bring out the lights, extension cords, and yard displays, it is important to think about safety. As a company that specializes in roofing, gutters, and windows, Dennis & Sons Contracting knows how important it is to protect both your home and yourself while decorating.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

Check your roof before hanging lights

If you plan to hang lights along your roofline, do a quick visual check first. Look for loose shingles, soft spots, or areas that may not support your weight. Never walk on a roof that is icy, wet, or unstable. When in doubt, use a sturdy ladder and hang lights from the edge rather than climbing onto the roof.

Use clips instead of nails

Avoid puncturing your roof, gutters, or window frames with nails, screws, or staples. Not only can this cause leaks and damage, it can void warranties. Instead, use plastic light clips designed to secure strands safely without harming your home’s exterior.

Protect your gutters

Lights should never be hung in a way that pulls or tugs on your gutters. Excess weight can cause sagging or separation, especially when combined with winter weather. Be sure the clips latch around the gutter rather than clamping inside it. If your gutters are already loose or damaged, consider getting them repaired before decorating.

Keep windows clear of cords

Avoid running extension cords through windows. This can damage the window frame, pinch the cord, or create drafts. Use outdoor-rated extension cords and keep all connections off the ground and away from snow, rain, or puddles.

Avoid overloading your circuits

Holiday lights are festive, but too many strands plugged into a single outlet can overload the circuit. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for how many sets can be safely connected. When possible, use LED lights since they use less power and stay cooler.

Be mindful of ladder safety

A sturdy ladder is essential for outdoor decorating. Place it on flat, solid ground and have someone hold it while you climb. Keep your body centered between the rails and avoid leaning too far to one side.

Inspect your décor before plugging in

Before decorating, check for frayed wires, cracked bulbs, or damaged cords. Replace anything worn or faulty. Only use décor that is rated for outdoor use.
